What's Included With EV Charger Installation

Every EV charger installation from SPD Electric includes complete service from initial assessment through final inspection.

Hardwired Installation vs. NEMA 14-50 Outlet

There are two ways to install a Level 2 EV charger: hardwiring the charger directly to a dedicated circuit, or installing a NEMA 14-50 outlet that the charger plugs into. Both meet code. Each has advantages depending on your situation.

Hardwired Installation

The charger is wired directly to a dedicated circuit with no plug. Most reliable for high-amperage charging.

Pros:

  • Higher amperage available (up to 48-amp continuous)
  • Cleaner aesthetic appearance
  • More weather-resistant for exterior installations
  • Faster charging speeds for EVs that support it
  • Required by some manufacturers for warranty (e.g., Tesla wired vs plug)

Cons:

  • Charger is permanently affixed (harder to relocate)
  • Requires removal of charger to service circuit
  • Slightly more expensive labor

NEMA 14-50 Outlet Installation

A standard 240V outlet is installed, and the charger plugs into the outlet (similar to an electric dryer plug).

Pros:

  • Charger is portable (can be unplugged and moved)
  • Easier to upgrade to a different charger later
  • Outlet can be used for other 240V needs (welder, RV)
  • Slightly lower installation cost

Cons:

  • Maximum 40-amp continuous (limits charging speed)
  • Plug connection requires periodic inspection
  • Less weather-tight for exterior installations
  • May require GFCI breaker per code

We help you decide between hardwired and outlet installation during your free assessment. The right choice depends on your charger model, your EV’s max charging speed, and where the charger will be located.

Our EV Charger Installation Process

From free estimate to final inspection — clear, step-by-step.

01

Free On-Site Assessment

We come to your home, evaluate your electrical panel capacity, identify the optimal charger location, measure cable runs, and discuss charger brand options. We provide a written itemized estimate before any work begins.

02

Permit & Charger Selection

Once you approve the estimate, we pull all required city permits (typically 3-7 business days) and order your selected EV charger if
not customer-supplied.

03

Installation

Most installations are completed in 2-6 hours. We install the dedicated 240V circuit, run conduit and wiring, install the disconnect (where required), and either hardwire the charger or install the NEMA 14-50 outlet. If a panel upgrade is needed, that work is coordinated with SCE in advance.

04

Testing & Verification

We test the circuit, verify proper voltage, confirm the charger is operational, and walk you through using the charger and any associated app or smart features.

05

City Inspection

Local building department inspector verifies all work meets code. Inspection typically scheduled within 1-3 business days of completion. Once approved, your installation is complete.

06

Walkthrough & Warranty

We provide a walkthrough of the completed installation, explain any maintenance considerations, and activate your 1-year workmanship warranty on installation labor.

Common Installation Scenarios

Most EV charger installations fall into one of three common scenarios. The right approach depends on where you park, your home layout, and your panel’s location.

Garage Installation

The most common installation. Charger is mounted on the garage wall near where the EV parks. We run the dedicated circuit from your main panel through interior or exterior conduit. Most garage installations take 2-4 hours when no panel upgrade is needed.

Outdoor Installation

For homes without garages or homes where the EV parks in a driveway or carport, we install a weatherproof exterior-rated charger with appropriate NEMA enclosures and weather-tight conduit. Adds approximately 1-2 hours to typical installation time.

Detached Structure Installation

For detached garages, ADUs, or workshops, we typically install a 50-amp or 60-amp subpanel near the structure first, then add the EV charger circuit from that subpanel. Includes underground conduit and proper grounding to current code.

EV Charger Installation Pricing

EV charger installation pricing depends on several factors. We provide free, written, itemized estimates so you know exactly what you’re paying for. Typical pricing in our service area:

Pricing List:

  • Hardwired Level 2 installation (panel within 25 ft of charger location): $800 – $1,800
  • NEMA 14-50 outlet installation (panel within 25 ft): $600 – $1,400
  • Long-distance circuit run (50+ ft): Additional $400 – $900
  • Exterior conduit and weatherproofing: Additional $200 – $600
  • Outdoor/exterior charger location: Additional $300 – $700
  • Disconnect switch installation (where required): Additional $200 – $400

Frequently Asked Questions About EV Charger Installation

How much does it cost to install a Level 2 EV charger?

Standard Level 2 EV charger installation typically costs $800-$1,800 for hardwired or $600-$1,400 for NEMA 14-50 outlet installation when your electrical panel is within 25 feet of the charger location. Long wire runs, exterior installations, and panel upgrades add to the cost. We provide free written itemized estimates with no hidden fees.

Most Level 2 EV charger installations are completed in 2-6 hours of on-site work. Garage installations near the panel are fastest (typically 2-4 hours). Long wire runs, exterior installations, or installations requiring a panel upgrade take longer. The full project including permits and inspection usually completes within 2-3 weeks.

Yes. California requires a permit for any installation involving a new dedicated 240V circuit. SPD Electric pulls all required permits as part of every EV charger installation. Permits also benefit you because the city inspection verifies code compliance — protecting your home insurance coverage and resale value.

About 60% of EV charger installations require a panel upgrade first. Older 100-amp panels typically lack the capacity to safely add a 40-50 amp EV charging circuit. We assess your panel during your free consultation. If a panel upgrade is needed, you may qualify for the SCE Charge Ready Home rebate.

Hardwired installation supports higher charging speeds (up to 48-amp continuous), looks cleaner, and is more weather-resistant. NEMA 14-50 outlet installation is more flexible (the charger can be unplugged and moved) and slightly cheaper. We recommend hardwired for permanent installations and NEMA 14-50 if you might relocate or upgrade your charger.

The right brand depends on your EV, home, and priorities. Tesla Wall Connector is excellent for Tesla owners. Wallbox Pulsar Plus is popular for multi-EV households. Emporia EV is budget-friendly. Grizzl-E is reliable without smart features. We’re brand-neutral — we recommend what’s right for your situation, not what gives us the highest margin.

Yes. Many customers buy their EV charger directly from Amazon, Tesla, or the manufacturer to take advantage of sales or specific features. We’re happy to install customer-supplied chargers as long as they’re UL-listed and appropriate for the installation. Just have it on-site before our installation appointment.

We are EVITP certified — the industry-recognized certification for EV charger installation across all brands. We install Tesla Wall Connectors as Level 2 chargers and have completed many Tesla charger installations for satisfied customers across our service area. The Tesla Certified Installer designation is a separate Tesla-specific program; we install Tesla Wall Connector equipment to manufacturer specifications regardless of that designation.

Southern California Edison’s Charge Ready Home program offers rebates of up to $4,200 (income-qualified) or up to $2,100 (geographic-qualified) toward electrical panel upgrades that enable EV charging. The rebate covers panel upgrade work, not the EV charger itself. Eligibility is based on income or location. We help eligible customers understand the application process during the free consultation.

Most modern Level 2 chargers (Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, ChargePoint Home Flex, Grizzl-E) are rated for outdoor installation with NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X ratings. We install outdoor chargers with appropriate weather-resistant conduit, weatherproof junction boxes, and proper drip loops to ensure long-term reliability in Southern California weather conditions.

Yes, but pricing depends on the distance and routing. Long wire runs (50+ feet) require larger gauge wire to handle voltage drop, which adds material cost. We may run conduit through the attic, along the exterior wall, or underground depending on your home’s layout. We assess routing options during your free consultation and recommend the most cost-effective approach.

Most charger issues are warranty issues handled by the manufacturer (typically 3-5 year warranty). If the issue is with the installation work itself — circuit problems, connections, or anything we installed — that’s covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty. We’re available for service calls if needed.
