About SPD Electric Corp

Family-Owned. IBEW Union Shop. Built by an Electrician Who Climbed the Ladder.

Built by an Electrician Who Spent 18 Years Mastering the Trade

At 18 years old, Samuel Hernandez-Cruz walked into LA Trade Tech to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. A counselor saw his interests and recommended electrical work. Samuel earned his A.A. in Electrical Construction and Maintenance, then enrolled in an apprenticeship with Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).

Two years in, he made a move that would shape the next 18 years of his career: he transferred to IBEW Local 11 — one of the most respected electrical unions in California. He spent the next decade and a half climbing the ladder. Apprentice. Journeyman. Foreman. General Foreman. By his last project — 16 years after he first joined the union — Samuel was acting Superintendent, running electrical operations on major commercial projects.

In 2023, after finally climbing the entire union corporate ladder, Samuel made another move: he started SPD Electric Corp. Not because he was unhappy with the union — but because he was ready for a new challenge. A new goal. The chance to build something that carries his name and his standards.

That’s why “SPD” stands for Superior Power Distribution. It’s the standard Samuel held himself to as a union electrician for 18 years. Now it’s the standard SPD holds to on every job — from a panel upgrade in Rancho Cucamonga to a tenant improvement build-out across Southern California.

What Makes SPD Different — Union Training, Family Values

SPD Electric isn’t a typical residential electrical contractor. Samuel built the company on the same standards he learned through IBEW Local 11 — the union that trained him for 18 years and continues to support SPD’s growth today.

IBEW Local 11 Trained

Samuel's 18 years with IBEW Local 11 — climbing from Apprentice to acting Superintendent — gave SPD a foundation most local contractors don't have. Union training means rigorous standards, continuous education, and a depth of experience built on commercial and industrial projects.

Drug-Tested, OSHA-Trained Crews

When SPD needs additional manpower, we request union electricians through IBEW Union Shop. Every union electrician is randomly drug tested, trained in CPR, and OSHA certified. Once a project is complete, they're dispatched back through the union. You always get qualified, professional electricians on your job.

Family-Owned at the Core

SPD's small core team includes Samuel's daughter Ashley (handling clerical work while studying business in college), his childhood friend Walter Campos (Foreman Electrician with 16 years in the trade), and 2nd-year Apprentice Cris Ballesteros. As Samuel says, this is family — and we treat every customer the same way.

OWNER & FOUNDER

Samuel founded SPD Electric in 2023 after 18 years as an IBEW Local 11 electrician. OPERATIONS

Samuel’s daughter and SPD’s operations backbone. Ashley handles clerical work, customer scheduling, and administrative coordination while pursuing a business degree in college. She’s the friendly voice that often greets customers calling SPD.

A Trade That Runs Through the Family

Samuel is a first-generation union electrician — the first in his family to join the trade. But he didn’t stay the only one for long. After his family and friends saw the stability and pride electrical work brought him, they began asking about joining the union too.

Today, four of Samuel’s friends and three of his cousins work as Apprentices, Journeymen, and Foremen — all through IBEW Union Shop, just at different companies. His son and nephew are joining the union apprenticeship next year.

What started as one electrician’s career has become a family tradition. And that family ethic — looking out for the people you work with, doing the job right, taking pride in your trade — is built into SPD’s foundation.

Real Project Experience

SPD Electric is small, but our experience runs deep. Samuel’s 18 years of union electrical work gives SPD the kind of project depth most local residential contractors can’t match.

First Prevailing Wage Project

In 2025, SPD completed our first prevailing wage project — an electrical upgrade at a school in Anaheim, California. Prevailing wage projects require contractors to have all certifications, insurance, workers' comp, vehicle insurance, performance bonds, and DIR Registration in order — basically every business document a contractor can have. We upgraded all light fixtures and switches throughout the school and provided control wiring for new HVAC units. It's the kind of project most residential contractors can't bid on.

70+ Panel Upgrades Completed

We've completed over 50 electrical panel upgrades through Southern California Edison's Charge Ready Home program — helping eligible homeowners save up to $4,200 on their projects. Plus another 20+ panel upgrades for non-SCE customers throughout the Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, and North Orange County.

50+ EV Chargers & Outlets Installed

As an EVITP Certified electrical contractor, SPD has installed over 50 Level 2 EV chargers and EV-ready outlets — including Tesla Wall Connectors, Wallbox, ChargePoint, and other major brands. We help customers navigate SCE rebate programs and install chargers that match their specific electric vehicles.
